Review: Botanica+Co at South Bangsar, KL

March 28, 2021

As the name suggests, Botanica+Co is FULL of greenery. As soon as we step in (or even before that actually), we are being enveloped in these big plants which can be seen all over the place. They also have huge windows so if you sit inside, you still feel very much connected to the nature outside.

The service was good overall, we were first seated outside due to lack of space indoors. But our server made sure to offer us an indoor seating as soon as it was available. We took the offer because the indoor vibes are quite different and we wanted to experience that.

The lighting in this place brings a very intimate feel to the restaurant. They also have all sorts of seating so it’s even good for events. In fact, the first time I visited Botanica+Co was for my friend’s baby shower!

One more good thing about this place is that it is very easy to find parking. But let’s get to the most important question – HOW IS THE FOOD?

Cauliflower Tikka Masala – RM 30

Overall I enjoyed this dish and it satisfied my craving of Indian food. It was not too spicy but had a subtle sour kick to it as well, which was well balanced by the dollops of yoghurt on top. I was surprised to find that it had chickpeas as well, which was good because I think that makes the dish more nutritious and satiating. The chickpeas did however ‘take over’ the meal a bit, the focus was not on the cauliflower.

One thing I felt lacking in this dish was gravy. Chickpeas can make dishes feel a bit dry due to their texture, so if this dish had a bit more gravy it would have been better. The coconut and pandan infused rice was wonderful, not something I’ve ever had before so I wasn’t sure whether I would like it or not, but it was actually pretty amazing.

Having papad/ papadom was a nice addition to the dish. They gave 2 big pieces which brought a bit of crunchiness to the meal, a welcome contrast to the rice. I also liked the plating of this dish – they put it on a banana leaf which was a nice touch.

Wagyu Beef Burger – RM 45

One good thing about this meal is that it’s not easy to find wagyu beef for such a price. However, one thing we didn’t like from the start before even receiving the meal – they did not give an option to choose how we wanted the beef done. My husband who ordered this meal, wanted his beef cooked medium but they informed us they only do well done.

Overall the verdict on this dish was that it was ‘just okay’. It did not taste bad at all, but just did not have anything special and felt lacking. However, the fries were a nice side – and there were a lot of them!

Botanica+Co is a nice place if you want to have a quiet dinner or even as a picturesque location for a get together with your friends. I would recommend making a reservation before going there. By the time we were leaving, it was dinner time and there was actually a queue to get in!
